Dallas: France legend Patrick Vieira launched a strong criticism of Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise and other French players after their disappointing 0-2 defeat against Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final.
France entered the semi-final as one of the tournament favourites, but they struggled to match Spain’s intensity, technical quality and tactical organisation at the decisive stage. The defeat ended Les Bleus’ hopes of reaching the World Cup final and left several of their biggest stars under scrutiny.
Spain dominate as France fail to respond
Spain produced a commanding performance against France, controlling possession and limiting the influence of France’s attacking stars. Despite having some of the most dangerous players in world football, France failed to create enough clear opportunities throughout the match.
Mbappe, Olise and Ousmane Dembele had played key roles in France’s successful World Cup campaign before the semi-final. However, against Spain’s disciplined defensive structure, the attacking trio struggled to make an impact.
Speaking on ITV1 after the match, Vieira expressed his disappointment with France’s overall performance.
“Spain won the game in every aspect. The French team didn’t turn up at all,” Vieira said. He added that Spain deserved their victory after delivering the level of performance required to defeat a strong French side.
The former midfielder, who played a major role in France’s golden generation, felt that the team’s biggest names failed to perform when the pressure was highest.
Olise unable to influence the game
Vieira particularly highlighted the struggles of Michael Olise, who had been one of France’s standout performers during the tournament.
The Bayern Munich winger was expected to provide creativity and attacking threat from wide areas, but Spain successfully restricted his involvement. Their defensive organisation prevented Olise from receiving the ball in dangerous positions.
“Olise was the main man, we needed him to get on the ball, but they stopped him playing, he didn’t get on the ball,” Vieira said.
According to Vieira, France needed their top players to step up in a major knockout match, but the team failed collectively.
“It was a big expectation of France to win the World Cup. We are all really disappointed by the result but mostly by the performance,” he said.
“We needed our top players to perform today, and they didn’t do it. It wasn’t one or two, it was all of them collectively. It was really bad.”
Defensive mistakes add to France’s problems
Apart from criticising the attacking players, Vieira also pointed towards defensive errors that contributed to France’s defeat.
France left-back Lucas Digne came under criticism after conceding the penalty that allowed Spain to take control of the match. Vieira felt Digne’s experience should have helped him deal better with the situation.
“Digne of course should do better. We are talking about someone with experience,” Vieira said.
He also criticised Désiré Doué for not providing enough defensive support on the left side.
According to Vieira, Doué had a responsibility to track movements and prevent Spain from exploiting space.
“The one-two was played around him, he has to be around him to stop his run or follow him. We can blame Digne for his tactical position, but Doué has to be more decisive and more defensive-minded,” Vieira explained.
France look to finish tournament positively
Although France’s World Cup title hopes have ended, they still have an opportunity to finish the tournament with a victory. Les Bleus will compete in the third-place playoff on Saturday.
The match will provide France with a chance to recover from their semi-final disappointment and give their players an opportunity to respond after heavy criticism.
For Spain, the victory confirmed their status as one of the strongest teams in international football. Their ability to neutralise France’s attacking threats and dominate a high-pressure knockout match underlined their impressive tournament campaign.
Conclusion
France’s semi-final exit has raised questions about the performance of their biggest stars, with Patrick Vieira among those demanding more from the team’s leaders. While Mbappe and his teammates have delivered outstanding moments during the tournament, their failure to produce in the biggest match has become the main talking point after Spain’s deserved victory.
