New Delhi: Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has offered a balanced assessment of Arjun Tendulkar, subtly disagreeing with his father Yograj Singh over the youngster’s primary role in cricket.

While Yograj recently suggested that Arjun should not be judged solely as a bowler and highlighted his batting potential, Yuvraj believes the 26-year-old is still primarily a bowler who can contribute with the bat.

Yuvraj praises Arjun’s work ethic

Yuvraj, who has been mentoring Arjun, spoke highly of his dedication and commitment to the game. He even remarked that Arjun’s work ethic surpasses his own during his playing days.

The former World Cup winner noted that Arjun is quick to learn and shows strong discipline in training sessions. He added that passing on knowledge to the next generation feels like a “full-circle moment”, especially given his own journey under the guidance of Sachin Tendulkar.

Yuvraj emphasised that much of what he teaches Arjun comes from lessons he himself learned from Sachin, particularly in handling mental and technical aspects of the game.

Difference in opinion with Yograj Singh

However, Yuvraj did not fully align with Yograj Singh’s recent remarks about Arjun’s all-round abilities.

Yograj had highlighted Arjun’s batting potential, suggesting he should not be viewed only as a bowler. Yuvraj, while acknowledging the improvement in Arjun’s batting, maintained that the youngster still has a long way to go in that department.

He explained that Arjun began his cricketing journey as a stronger bowler and continues to be more effective in that role.

“A bowler who can bat”

Clarifying his stance, Yuvraj described Arjun as “a bowler who can bat”, drawing a comparison with his own career.

Yuvraj pointed out that he himself was a batting all-rounder who could contribute with the ball, whereas Arjun’s skillset currently leans more towards bowling.

He added that with continued guidance and practice, Arjun’s batting will improve, but it is important to recognise his core strength at this stage of his career.

Mentorship and development

Arjun Tendulkar, currently part of Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2026, has been working closely with both Yuvraj and Yograj Singh to refine his skills.

The mentorship from experienced cricketers has been seen as a key factor in his development, especially as he looks to establish himself in competitive cricket.

Yuvraj stressed that consistent effort and clarity in role will be crucial for Arjun’s growth as a professional cricketer.

Balancing expectations

Being the son of one of cricket’s greatest players, Arjun has always been under intense scrutiny. Yuvraj acknowledged the pressure but praised the youngster for staying focused and committed.

He noted that expectations can be overwhelming, but Arjun’s attitude towards learning and improvement sets a strong foundation for future success.

Conclusion

While differing slightly from his father’s view, Yuvraj Singh’s assessment of Arjun Tendulkar highlights both promise and realism. Recognising him as a bowler who can develop his batting further, Yuvraj underlined the importance of patience and continued hard work.

As Arjun continues his journey in IPL 2026 and beyond, his progress will be closely watched, with guidance from experienced mentors playing a pivotal role in shaping his career.
