Squid Game season 2 breaks global Netflix record with historic debut
We all knew Squid Game season 2 would make waves, following its massive success with season 1, which was Netflix’s most-watched series by far. But now, the show has set a new benchmark.
Although it’s too soon to share exact viewership numbers, the show has already achieved an extraordinary feat. Squid Game season 2 has become the first series to debut at #1 in all 93 countries where Netflix is available. From the US to Cyprus, Honduras to Kenya, and even Thailand, the show has dominated worldwide. This global achievement is unheard of, as even popular series rarely reach the top spot everywhere at once. Other major hits like Stranger Things and Wednesday didn’t manage to achieve this clean sweep on their debut.
The big question now is whether Squid Game season 2 can surpass the 2.2 billion hours of viewing time that season 1 accumulated. Though it’s hard to imagine surpassing that number, some shows like Money Heist and Stranger Things have exceeded expectations for viewership in later seasons.
However, there’s one factor working against it: season 2 has only 7 episodes, down from season 1’s 9, which could reduce total viewing time. Despite this, it may still attract a larger global audience.
Squid Game season 2 is receiving more mixed reviews, with a 63% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to the first season’s 83%. This could be due to the story feeling incomplete, as the season ends on a cliffhanger, setting up season 3. Still, this record-breaking debut puts the show on track for massive success.
