Squid Game Season 2 Finale: A Shocking Cliffhanger and What’s Next for Season 3
The final moments of Squid Game Season 2 were nothing short of brutal, leaving fans reeling after a shocking twist. The rebellion led by Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) against the deadly games is swiftly crushed, and in an unexpected turn, his ally is revealed to be the villainous Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). In a heart-wrenching moment, Gi-hun witnesses his best friend Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) being killed by the Front Man, ending the season on a cliffhanger that promises even more chaos in Season 3.
A Defeated Hero: Gi-hun’s Struggle
Creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk explained that the decision to end the season with such a dramatic defeat for Gi-hun was driven by the character’s immense sense of loss and guilt. “Gi-hun has a huge sense of loss, defeat, and guilt weighing on him,” Hwang shared, emphasizing how the character’s failure to stop the games reflected his inner turmoil. The rebellion, though passionate, ultimately leads to devastation and a crushing personal loss for Gi-hun.
The Front Man’s Master Plan
At the heart of Season 2 is the relentless showdown between Gi-hun and the Front Man. The latter manipulates Gi-hun throughout the season, allowing him to believe he had a chance to end the games. “The Front Man totally played Gi-hun, and just made use of him in every possible way,” actor Lee Jung-jae explained. The Front Man’s role in the games, from manipulating votes to playing on the greed of the players, reflects the dark themes of capitalism and human exploitation. “The winner takes all and the losers are driven to lose their humanity,” said Hwang.
Gi-hun’s Rebellion and Its Cost
Gi-hun’s decision to take up arms and lead an insurrection against the system marks a stark departure from the character seen in Season 1. No longer the flaky gambler, Gi-hun becomes a man driven by vengeance, willing to fight to stop the games. However, his efforts are tragically futile, culminating in the loss of his best friend, Jung-bae.
