Mangaluru: The Department of French, School of Languages and Cultural Studies, St Aloysius University (Deemed to be University), organised the French Fest Éclosion 2025 on 8th January at the LCRI Hall. The event celebrated linguistic and cultural diversity, drawing participation from eight institutions across Mangaluru.
The festival was inaugurated by Mr Roshan Patrao, the chief guest, with Dr Melwyn D’Cunha SJ, Pro-Vice Chancellor, presiding over the programme. Other dignitaries on the dais included Dr Alwyn D’Sa, Registrar of St Aloysius College (Autonomous); Mr Mark Pereira, Head of the French Department; and student coordinators Mr Royston D’Souza and Ms Vandan.
Keynote addresses encourage curiosity and connection
During the inauguration, Mr Roshan Patrao reminisced about his time at St Aloysius, urging students to “wonder like a child” and emphasising that curiosity leads to learning and discovery.
Dr Melwyn D’Cunha SJ shared personal anecdotes from his experiences in France, encouraging students to expand their perspectives by learning new languages and embracing different cultures. He remarked, “A renaissance is possible when we reflect on our origins and aspirations.”
Day-long festivities
The festival featured a variety of activities, including quizzes, treasure hunts, art competitions, mock press sessions, and a vibrant fashion show. These events highlighted the creativity and enthusiasm of participants, fostering a shared appreciation for French culture and language.
Valedictory ceremony
At the valedictory function, Dr Charles V. Furtado, Director of the Administrative Block, applauded the efforts of the French Department staff and students for organising a successful event. He also congratulated the winners and participants of the competitions.
The programme concluded with remarks from Dr Ronald Nazareth, Registrar of St Aloysius University, and other dignitaries who celebrated the collaborative spirit and passion of the event.
Participation and impact
Over 150 students from eight schools and colleges in Mangaluru participated in the fest, showcasing a vibrant spirit of collaboration and a shared love for the French language and culture.
