Sumy Attack: Zelenskyy Urges Global Action After Deadly Missile Strike
A devastating Russian ballistic missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy claimed more than 21 lives on Sunday, leaving a scene of horror and destruction. The strike targeted the city centre during a busy time, with people on the streets for Palm Sunday, Ukraine’s emergency services reported.
Heart-wrenching footage shows the aftermath — burning vehicles, shattered glass, chunks of debris, and bodies lying motionless as emergency teams rushed to save the injured. Residential buildings, schools, and parked cars were caught in the blast.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared the visuals online, calling for a strong and united international response. “This is how Russia wages war — by targeting civilians on holy days,” he said. “Only monsters can commit such acts. My deepest condolences to the victims’ families. Rescue teams are working tirelessly at the site.”
In a powerful statement on social media, Zelenskyy added, “Missiles won’t be stopped by talks — only decisive pressure can bring peace. The world must treat Russia as it would a terrorist regime.”
The strike came shortly after high-level accusations between Russia and Ukraine over violations of a US-brokered agreement meant to limit attacks on energy infrastructure — underlining the fragile and worsening state of peace efforts in the now three-year-long conflict.
Zelenskyy’s appeal was directed at the U.S., Europe, and the global community to increase support and put pressure on Russia to end its campaign of terror.
