Mangaluru: Sudhir Kumar Reddy, an IPS officer famed as “Super Cop” in Karnataka and “Singham” in Andhra Pradesh, has returned to Mangaluru amidst rising communal tensions. Appointed as the new City Police Commissioner, he reached the coastal city at 7 PM on Friday and assumed his duties without delay.

Reddy had earlier served as the Superintendent of Police in Dakshina Kannada for five months in 2018. His abrupt transfer to Belgaum was allegedly due to interference from the sand mafia. Disillusioned by the system, he opted for deputation to Andhra Pradesh in 2020, serving in three districts—each for a year—as his term allowed.

He began his AP tenure as Vigilance SP in Vijayawada, then moved to Kurnool, and finally took charge as SP of Konaseema in August 2022. Previously, as SP of West Godavari, he tackled unlawful activities head-on, restoring law and order and gaining public praise.

A native of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, and an engineering graduate from Pondicherry, Reddy joined the IPS in 2010 and chose the Karnataka cadre. His career saw critical postings in Bhatkal, Bidar, Mandya, and Dakshina Kannada. His no-nonsense handling of the Sharath Madiwala case in 2018 earned him both admiration and political pushback.

On Friday, Reddy arrived at the commissioner’s office around 6:30 PM. Despite formal honors planned, he dismissed the ceremony and went straight to work, firmly addressing officers. He immediately began reshuffling key personnel and is expected to transfer major station inspectors soon.
