Mangaluru: A severe drinking water crisis has gripped Surathkal and nearby areas under Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), leaving residents in distress. Several localities, including Katipalla, Krishnapura, Kana, and Kulai, are experiencing either a complete water cut or an irregular supply, receiving water only once every three days for a few hours.
Srinath Kulal, Secretary of the CPIM Surathkal Unit, stated that despite repeated complaints, MCC officials have failed to resolve the crisis. He warned that if immediate steps are not taken to restore daily water supply as per regulations, residents will launch protests.
Allegations of Unofficial Water Rationing
Kulal alleged that an unauthorized rationing system has been imposed in Surathkal. While Mangaluru city saw an end to water rationing post-monsoon, Surathkal continues to receive water only once in three days. In some areas, supply has been reduced to once every four or five days, and certain localities have had no water for over a week.
Complaints to authorities have yielded no results, with officials blaming delays on the ongoing Jalasiri project. Pipeline repairs, which should take hours, are deliberately stretched to three or four days, worsening the hardship for residents.
Accusing the administration of artificially creating a scarcity, the CPIM Surathkal Committee has demanded immediate resolution of the crisis, warning of strong protests if the issue remains unaddressed.
