Suspected Rabid Cow Causes Havoc in Kolya, Dies After Capture
A cow suspected of having rabies caused a commotion in Kolya near Adka within the Someshwara municipality limits on Wednesday, September 11. The cow entered a residential area, causing panic as it attacked a woman and damaged a scooter. Locals quickly intervened, restraining the cow with a rope.
Municipal vice president Ravishankar was alerted and assisted in securing the cow. Upon learning of the incident, Speaker U.T. Khader dispatched a team of veterinary officers to the location. After evaluating the cow’s behavior, the veterinarians suspected it might be rabid. Shortly after being administered anesthesia, the cow died.
Dr. Gajendra Kumar, a veterinary officer from Kotekaru Government Veterinary Hospital, suggested that the cow might have contracted rabies from a bite by a rabid dog. However, official confirmation is pending lab testing of the cow’s brain, subject to the owner’s approval. Dr. Kumar also clarified that while the cow cannot directly transmit rabies, its saliva could spread the infection if it contacts an open wound.
