Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone is reported to take design cues from the super-slim iPhone Air, promising an ultrawide bendable screen housed in a sturdy hinge.
Design inspired by iPhone Air
The new foldable iPhone is expected to feature two ultra-thin panels, similar in thickness to the iPhone Air’s 5.6mm design, joined by a robust hinge. The hybrid device will have a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.8-inch bendable inner screen, giving users a large, flexible viewing experience. The screens are likely to be supplied by Samsung Display, which already produces panels for Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold and Flip series.
Manufacturing and expected launch
Foxconn in China is expected to handle manufacturing, and Apple may unveil its first foldable iPhone at the annual fall event in September next year. The device is anticipated to carry a premium price tag of around $2,000.
Competition in foldable segment
Rival brands including Samsung, Oppo, Motorola, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Vivo, Huawei, and Tecno have been selling foldable phones for years. Despite stiff competition, Apple’s strong brand value in Western and Indian markets is expected to generate high demand, as seen with the latest iPhone models.
Build quality and features
The foldable iPhone is expected to boast aerospace-grade titanium construction, following the sturdy build quality of the iPhone Air, which has withstood extreme bending tests. It may feature Apple’s powerful A20 Pro silicon chip and a high-density battery capable of lasting a full day under heavy usage.
