OpenAI has officially rolled out GPT-5.1–powered ChatGPT personalities to users in India, allowing people to choose from eight distinct conversation styles. Many users reported seeing a pop-up on the ChatGPT interface on December 10 asking them to select a preferred personality preset, confirming the feature’s arrival alongside the model’s India deployment.

The rollout follows OpenAI’s announcement earlier this week that GPT-5.1 was being expanded across India at a faster pace than earlier international versions. The upgrade refines ChatGPT’s tone and conversational mannerisms while keeping its underlying intelligence unchanged.

Eight distinct tones now available

GPT-5.1 introduces three new personalitiesProfessional, Candid and Quirky — taking the total from five to eight. Earlier modes have been refined, with “Listener” renamed as Friendly and “Robots” now called Efficient.

The full list includes:

  • Default (neutral)
  • Professional (polished and precise)
  • Friendly (warm and chatty)
  • Candid (direct and encouraging)
  • Quirky (playful and imaginative)
  • Efficient (concise and plain)
  • Nerdy (exploratory and enthusiastic)
  • Cynical (critical and sarcastic)

OpenAI says users can switch tones anytime through settings, making the chatbot more adaptable for different tasks and moods — from writing emails in Professional mode to casual chats in Friendly or light-hearted interactions in Quirky.

What GPT-5.1 improves behind the scenes

While personalities are the most visible update, GPT-5.1 also introduces improvements in responsiveness, reasoning and adaptability. OpenAI is deploying two model variants:

  • GPT-5.1 Instant for faster, natural conversation
  • GPT-5.1 Thinking for complex reasoning, coding, and detailed analysis

Reviewers say the update makes ChatGPT feel more “human”, with Instant offering smoother chat-like responses and Thinking delivering deeper, structured explanations.

India could see GPT-5.2 soon

There is growing speculation that GPT-5.2 may follow shortly, bringing further refinements or additional personality modes. For now, GPT-5.1 marks a major step in making AI assistants more personal, expressive and aligned with users’ preferences in India.
