New Delhi: Google has expanded advertisements in its AI-powered Search experience to India, bringing sponsored results into conversational AI-generated answers. The rollout, announced on October 28, covers India and nine other countries, marking another step in the company’s efforts to integrate advertising into AI-driven online searches.
The change means users asking detailed questions through Google’s AI Mode may see advertisements alongside or within AI-generated responses when their searches have commercial relevance. These advertisements will carry a clear Sponsored label to distinguish them from organic information.
The expansion also covers Australia, Canada, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Google plans to extend the feature to additional markets, including Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom, during the fourth quarter of 2026.
The move reflects how online search is changing as users increasingly ask conversational questions instead of entering short keywords. Google says its AI Mode queries are, on average, three times longer than traditional Search queries.
What changes for Google users in India?
Google’s AI Mode allows users to ask detailed questions and receive AI-generated responses that can include explanations, comparisons and suggestions.
With the latest expansion, advertisements can appear within or alongside these responses when Google’s systems identify commercial relevance.
For example, someone asking for advice on choosing a laptop for video editing could receive an AI-generated explanation of processor requirements, memory capacity and display specifications. Sponsored laptop listings or related advertisements may appear alongside the response.
Similarly, a person researching ways to clean a swimming pool could receive an AI-generated explanation and see sponsored advertisements for pool-cleaning equipment or related products.
The advertisements are intended to connect users with relevant products and services while they are researching a subject. Google says the sponsored placements will remain visually distinct from the organic AI-generated content.
Importantly, the announcement concerns advertising within AI-powered Search experiences. It does not mean that every Google search will automatically produce an advertisement inside an AI response. The appearance of sponsored content depends on the search query, commercial relevance and advertising availability.
Advertisements will carry a Sponsored label
One of the key aspects of Google’s rollout is the distinction between paid advertisements and organic AI-generated information.
The company has confirmed that advertisements appearing in AI Mode and AI Overviews will be clearly marked as Sponsored.
This labelling is intended to help users identify when a product or service is being promoted through a paid placement rather than being presented as part of the organic search response.
Google has also stated that paid advertising will not influence the information generated by its AI systems. Buying advertisements does not give a business the ability to change the content of an organic AI answer or determine which information the system presents.
The company says organic AI responses are generated independently of the advertising auction. This distinction will be important as sponsored content becomes more integrated into conversational search experiences.
Google says AI searches are becoming longer
Google’s expansion is linked to changing user behaviour.
Traditional searches often involve short phrases such as a product name, location or specific question. AI-powered search encourages users to provide more context, explain their requirements and ask follow-up questions.
According to Google, queries in AI Mode are, on average, three times longer than traditional Search queries. The company believes these detailed questions provide more information about what users are looking for.
For advertisers, this creates opportunities to reach people at different stages of their decision-making process.
Someone searching for a new smartphone, for instance, may initially ask about battery life and camera quality before comparing brands, prices and features. The additional context could help Google’s advertising systems identify relevant products and services.
Google says its internal research has found that click-through rates for sponsored product listings in AI Mode are similar to those for organic product listings. However, the company has not provided India-specific performance figures in its announcement.
What the update means for businesses and advertisers
The expansion creates another advertising placement for businesses targeting consumers through Google Search.
Companies already using eligible Google advertising campaigns will not need to create entirely separate campaigns specifically for AI Mode. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can participate automatically when their advertisements are eligible and relevant.
Google supports text advertisements and Shopping advertisements in these AI-powered placements. It is also experimenting with other formats, including local inventory and vehicle advertisements.
The advertising system can match promotions directly to a user’s query or use contextual matching based on both the question and the AI-generated response.
For example, a direct search for a particular product could trigger an advertisement based on the query itself. A broader question about solving a problem could lead to sponsored suggestions related to products or services mentioned in the AI response.
The company says advertisers will not need an additional campaign budget simply to participate in these placements. Existing advertising auction and billing arrangements apply.
US users get multi-turn advertisements
Alongside the international expansion, Google is introducing a more advanced advertising format in the United States called multi-turn ads.
AI Mode conversations often involve several questions on the same subject. Users may begin with a general query and then ask follow-up questions to compare options or understand specific details.
Multi-turn advertising allows relevant sponsored placements to appear during these follow-up interactions.
For example, a user researching holiday destinations could ask about suitable locations, compare accommodation options and then explore transport arrangements. Sponsored suggestions may appear as the conversation develops.
However, this multi-turn advertising feature is being introduced in the US. Google has not announced that it will be available in India as part of the current rollout. Indian users are part of the wider expansion of standard AI Mode advertising.
Will Google AI answers become advertisements?
The introduction of sponsored placements raises questions about how users will distinguish independent information from commercial promotions.
Google’s stated position is that advertisements will be labelled clearly and will not influence the organic content generated by its AI systems.
Users should nevertheless pay attention to the Sponsored label when evaluating product recommendations or service suggestions. Sponsored placements are paid advertisements, and their presence does not necessarily mean that the promoted product is the most suitable option for an individual user.
For important purchasing decisions, comparing specifications, checking independent reviews and examining prices across multiple sellers remain useful steps.
The company says it will continue testing advertising formats to ensure that sponsored content remains relevant and distinguishable from organic information.
A new phase in Google’s AI search strategy
The expansion to India reflects Google’s effort to develop advertising formats suited to conversational search. As users increasingly rely on AI-generated responses for research, comparisons and product discovery, the company is adapting its advertising business to these changing habits.
For Indian users, the immediate change is the possibility of seeing sponsored advertisements within or alongside AI-powered search answers. For businesses, it provides another route to reach potential customers through existing advertising campaigns.
The effectiveness of the rollout will depend on how relevant the sponsored placements are and whether users can easily distinguish them from independent information.
As AI-powered search becomes a more prominent part of the online experience, the balance between useful answers, transparent advertising and user trust will remain an important issue.
