Google has announced a powerful suite of new AI-driven shopping features designed to simplify how users search, compare and purchase products online or from nearby stores. The upgrades enhance Google’s AI Mode, introducing capabilities such as automated store calling and an agentic checkout system that can complete purchases automatically when prices drop to user-set levels. The company says the aim is to reduce friction and minimise the number of steps shoppers must take, whether buying online or checking availability in physical stores.
Google first previewed the agentic checkout feature at I/O 2025, demonstrating how AI could track a product’s price and complete a purchase without users needing to revisit the website or manually place the order.
AI Mode enables natural, conversational shopping
According to Google, the revamped AI Mode now lets users describe what they want in everyday language instead of typing specific keywords. For instance, a user can say, “I need a light sweater for a trip to Atlanta that works with jeans and dresses,” and the system will process details such as weather, style, and suitability before showing refined product listings.
Results include:
- Prices
- Reviews
- Availability across stores
- AI-generated comparison tables
For US users, these enhanced shopping results will also appear inside the Gemini app, where product listings and price comparisons replace traditional text-only answers.
AI-powered store calling brings real-time availability updates
One of the most notable new features is AI-powered store calling. When users search for products “near me” in categories like toys, electronics, health and beauty, a new button labelled “Let Google Call” appears.
Users can enter specific details such as:
- Brand
- Variant
- Budget
Google’s AI — using a combination of Duplex technology and Gemini models — will then call nearby stores, ask about stock availability, confirm pricing, and collect offer details. The responses are summarised and delivered to users via text or email.
The assistant automatically selects which stores to contact and what questions to ask, aiming to eliminate the repeated calls users often make during purchase planning.
Agentic checkout automates the purchase process
Google is also launching agentic checkout, a feature that builds on its existing price-tracking tool. Once a user tracks a product and sets a target price range, the system alerts them when the price drops. The notification includes a “Buy for me” button.
Here is how it works:
- Users confirm their payment details and delivery preferences.
- Google’s system completes the purchase on the merchant’s website using Google Pay.
- The order is placed only after explicit user approval — no transactions occur automatically.
Agentic checkout is initially rolling out in the US with select merchants, including:
- Wayfair
- Chewy
- Quince
- Select Shopify sellers
Conclusion
With AI-powered store calling, conversational shopping and automated checkout, Google is attempting to reshape online shopping into a more efficient, personalised and proactive experience. These features also reflect the broader industry shift toward agentic AI — systems capable of performing tasks rather than merely responding to queries. While the rollout currently focuses on the US market, Google’s approach signals a major step forward for global e-commerce, setting the stage for a more streamlined future of digital shopping.
