Google may soon allow free-tier users to try the redesigned Fitbit app, signalling a wider rollout of its refreshed health interface introduced alongside the Pixel Watch 4 in August 2025.

Until now, the new Fitbit experience has been limited to Fitbit Premium subscribers enrolled in the Public Preview programme. However, recent findings within the Fitbit app’s code suggest that this restriction may soon change.

Signs of expansion to free users

New strings discovered in Fitbit app version 4.60 explicitly reference “free tier” users within the Public Preview. These messages invite non-paying users to “explore your new redesigned app” and provide feedback on early health and fitness features.

The text strongly indicates that Google is preparing to open the redesigned interface to free users, while keeping it optional through the Public Preview. Users would be able to opt in, try the new layout, and switch back to the standard version at any time.

What free users may get

If rolled out, free-tier users can expect access to the redesigned structure of the app, including:

  • A refreshed Today tab with a daily health feed
  • Dedicated Fitness and Sleep tabs for clearer insights
  • A new Health tab for browsing long-term data

These features were showcased when Google announced the redesign during the launch of the Pixel Watch 4.

AI health coach likely to remain premium-only

Notably absent from the “free tier” strings is the AI-powered personal health coach, branded as “Ask Coach”. This feature allows users to request personalised workouts, explore trends, and receive adaptive health guidance.

While Ask Coach is mentioned elsewhere in the app code under the Public Preview, it does not appear to be linked to free users. This suggests that Fitbit Premium subscriptions will continue to gate advanced AI-driven features.

Why this matters

Opening the redesigned app to free users could significantly improve accessibility and user engagement, especially in markets like India where many users rely on free health-tracking tools. It also allows Google to gather broader feedback before a full public rollout.

At the same time, keeping AI coaching behind a paywall maintains a clear distinction between free and Premium tiers, aligning with Google’s subscription strategy.

What to expect next

Currently, Fitbit Premium is required to join the Public Preview, so Google will need to adjust eligibility rules before free users can participate. An official announcement is expected in the coming weeks.
