Google Photos is getting a playful upgrade. The tech giant has introduced a new generative AI feature called “Me Meme”, allowing users to create memes using their own photos—bringing humour, creativity and personal expression together inside the Photos app.
Turning personal moments into memes
With Me Meme, users can select a meme-style template or upload one of their own, add a personal photo, and let Google’s AI generate a meme image. The feature is powered by Google’s Gemini AI, specifically its Nano Banana image model, which already supports creative tools like converting photos into cartoons or paintings.
Google says the feature is experimental, meaning the final image may not perfectly match the original photo. For best results, users are advised to upload clear, well-lit, front-facing images.
Rolling out first in the US
The feature was officially announced on Thursday via Google’s Photos Community page, after being spotted in development last year. Me Meme will initially roll out to users in the United States on both Android and iOS over the coming weeks.
Once available, it will appear under the “Create” tab in Google Photos. After generating a meme, users can save it, share it across platforms, or regenerate it for a fresh take.
Why memes matter to Google
While the feature is meant purely for fun, it also reflects a larger trend: users enjoy AI tools that place themselves at the centre of creativity. Google is clearly encouraging people to return to the Photos app not just to store memories, but to play with them.
Similar behaviour was seen with AI tools that let users insert themselves into edits, videos or images—features that consistently drive engagement.
More templates on the way
Google says more meme templates will be added over time, giving users even more ways to experiment. Though Me Meme is light-hearted, it shows how AI is quietly reshaping everyday apps—turning simple photo libraries into creative playgrounds.
