Google has quietly removed a long-standing feature from the Google Play Store that allowed Android users to uninstall updates for system apps directly from the app listing. The change has been rolled out widely, with no official explanation from the company so far.

‘Uninstall updates’ option no longer visible

Until recently, Android users could open a system app’s Play Store page—such as Android Auto or Pixel Camera Services—and use the ‘Uninstall’ button to roll back updates to the factory version of the app. That option has now disappeared.

System app listings on the Play Store now show only an ‘Open’ button, with no way to uninstall updates from the store interface. This change has been observed across multiple Play Store versions, ranging from 49.1.32-31 to 49.2.25-31, indicating it is not limited to a specific update.

The removal applies not only to system apps visible in the app drawer, but also to unlisted system apps that typically do not appear on the home screen.

Users forced to take longer route

With the Play Store option gone, users who want to roll back system app updates must now:

  • Open Settings
  • Navigate to Apps
  • Select the relevant system app
  • Use the ‘Uninstall updates’ option from the app info screen

While the functionality still exists at the system level, experts say the removal from the Play Store makes the process less intuitive and more inconvenient, especially for less tech-savvy users.

Why users uninstall system app updates

Android users often uninstall system app updates to:

  • Fix bugs introduced by recent updates
  • Revert unwanted interface changes
  • Restore removed features
  • Improve performance or stability

For such users, the Play Store shortcut offered a quick and accessible solution, which is now no longer available.

Timing raises questions

The change comes at a curious time. Google has recently enhanced remote app management, allowing users to see all devices linked to their account on a Play Store app page and remotely uninstall apps from specific devices.

Against that backdrop, removing the ability to uninstall system app updates directly from Play Store listings has puzzled Android observers, as it appears to run counter to recent usability improvements.

No official explanation yet

Google has not issued any public statement clarifying whether the removal is intentional, temporary, or part of a broader redesign of Play Store system app handling.

Until clarity emerges, Android users will need to rely on the Settings menu to manage system app updates—a small change in design, but one that significantly affects everyday usability for many.
