Microsoft Chairman and CEO, Satya Nadella, emphasized India’s potential in pioneering AI research, citing its strong foundation in mathematics. Addressing concerns over job displacement due to AI, Nadella argued that the technology would generate fresh opportunities rather than cause mass unemployment.
During a discussion with Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada, Nadella pointed out that India’s academic and mathematical expertise makes it well-equipped for cutting-edge research. He noted that India has the potential to make the next big leap in AI, as a single mathematical breakthrough could revolutionize the field.
Nadella also tackled fears of AI-induced job losses, using the growth of call centre jobs from 4 million in 2000 to 17 million today as an example of technology creating new job sectors. He emphasized that the world of software development still has vast untapped potential.
On the topic of AI’s risks, Prasada mentioned the need for careful regulation to address issues like fake content, with the government prepared to introduce new legislation if necessary. Nadella, however, reassured the audience of Microsoft’s dedication to responsible AI development, highlighting its focus on safety, privacy, and building trust.
Microsoft has also formed new AI partnerships with Indian companies and announced plans to invest $3 billion in expanding its cloud infrastructure. Additionally, the company will train 500,000 students and teachers in AI by 2026, targeting rural areas.
