With counterfeit electronics flooding online marketplaces and local grey markets, consumers in Karnataka are increasingly falling prey to fake Apple products that closely mimic the originals. From iPhones and AirPods to chargers and Apple Watches, experts warn that visual similarity alone is no longer enough to confirm authenticity. Consumer awareness, therefore, plays a crucial role in preventing financial loss and safety risks.

Why counterfeit Apple products are a growing concern

Fake Apple devices are not just cheaper imitations; many pose serious risks, including battery explosions, data theft, and poor durability. In coastal districts such as Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, local traders say complaints related to fake accessories have risen sharply, especially during festive and discount seasons.

Verify the serial number, but don’t stop there

The first step is to check the product’s serial number, available under Settings > General > About or on the packaging. Enter it on Apple’s official coverage page. Genuine products display the correct model and warranty details. However, authorities caution that some counterfeit devices reuse real serial numbers, making this step necessary but not sufficient.

Software behaviour reveals the truth

Software remains the clearest indicator. On iPhones and iPads, the App Store should be Apple’s own. Any redirection to Google Play or a browser-based store confirms a fake device. When connected to a computer, genuine Apple devices prompt users to “Trust” the system via Finder or iTunes.

AirPods and Apple Watch need deeper checks

Authentic AirPods automatically show a smooth pairing animation and battery levels when opened near an iPhone. They also appear in the Find My app and carry unique serial numbers on each earbud.
Similarly, an Apple Watch can only be paired using the official Watch app. Thick display borders or reliance on third-party apps are strong indicators of counterfeit models.

Chargers and cables can be dangerous

Fake chargers are a major fire hazard. Original Apple cables include “Designed by Apple in California” text, smooth contacts, and a 12-digit serial number. Consumers are advised to buy only MFi-certified accessories.

Staying informed protects consumers

Consumer rights groups in Karnataka stress that awareness is the strongest defence. Buying from authorised sellers and verifying devices immediately after purchase can prevent long-term losses.
