New Delhi: Instagram is tightening its approach to AI-generated social media accounts as increasingly realistic virtual personalities make it harder for users to distinguish between real people and artificial intelligence-created identities.

The Meta-owned platform is renaming its existing “AI creator” label to “AI-generated profile” and introducing a stricter approach to accounts built around AI-generated people. Under the updated system, Instagram may restrict the reach of such profiles if they are detected as AI-generated but fail to disclose that fact.

The move comes as AI-generated influencers and virtual personalities become increasingly realistic and gain visibility across social media. Instagram’s new policy is aimed specifically at making the identity behind these profiles clearer to users.

Instagram changes its AI label

Instagram began testing the AI creator label in May for accounts that regularly shared AI-generated content. At that stage, the label was optional, and Instagram said adding it would not affect how widely a profile or its posts were recommended.

The platform is now changing that approach for profiles featuring AI-generated people.

The label will be renamed AI-generated profile, a term Instagram says is intended to make the nature of such accounts clearer. Creators operating these profiles are expected to activate the label themselves. Once enabled, it will appear on the profile and alongside its content when an individual post does not already carry an AI-related disclosure.

The change is significant because many AI-generated personalities are designed to look like real people. Users may follow, interact with or even trust such accounts without immediately realising that the person shown in the photographs or videos does not exist in the real world.

Undisclosed AI profiles could lose reach

Instagram’s biggest change is not simply the new name for the label. The platform says it may restrict the reach of profiles that it detects as featuring AI-generated people but do not use the required disclosure.

In some cases, these profiles could become ineligible for Instagram recommendations.

This means an AI-generated influencer could continue to maintain an Instagram account, but its ability to reach new audiences through recommendations could be significantly reduced if the creator does not disclose that the profile represents an AI-generated person.

The distinction could have an important impact on AI-generated influencer accounts, particularly those that depend on Instagram’s recommendation systems to attract followers beyond their existing audience.

Not every use of AI requires the new label

Instagram has also made clear that the policy does not apply to every creator who uses artificial intelligence.

A creator who uses AI to edit a photograph, improve a caption, create a graphic or make other changes during the creative process does not need to use the AI-generated profile label.

The new disclosure is specifically intended for profiles where the person presented as the central identity is itself generated by AI.

This distinction means that conventional creators can continue using AI-assisted editing and creative tools without automatically being categorised as AI-generated profiles.

The focus is instead on preventing users from being misled about whether the person represented by an account actually exists.

Creators can appeal reach restrictions

Instagram has also provided a way for creators to challenge a decision if they believe their profile has been incorrectly identified as an AI-generated account.

Creators whose reach is restricted will have two options to restore their eligibility for recommendations.

They can add the AI-generated profile label if their account does in fact feature an AI-generated person. Alternatively, they can appeal the decision through Instagram’s Account Status system if they believe the platform has made an error.

This appeal mechanism is important because AI tools are increasingly being used in ways that blur the line between fully generated content and human-created material that has simply been enhanced using artificial intelligence.

Why Instagram is taking action

Instagram’s policy change comes amid growing concerns about what has been described as “AI slop” — large volumes of low-effort or misleading AI-generated material circulating online.

However, Instagram’s latest measure is narrower than a blanket ban on AI-generated content.

The platform is not preventing users from creating virtual personalities or publishing AI-generated material. Instead, it is attempting to ensure that users are given enough information to understand when an apparently real person is actually an artificial creation.

Instagram says the change is partly driven by complaints from users who discovered that profiles appearing to represent real people were actually built around entirely AI-generated identities.

AI influencers create a new challenge for social media

The rapid improvement of generative AI has made it possible to create highly realistic faces, photographs, videos and personalities.

Some virtual influencers can maintain a consistent appearance across hundreds of images and interact with followers as though they were ordinary social media personalities.

For users, this creates a new verification challenge. Traditional signs that an account may not represent a real person can become increasingly difficult to identify when AI-generated content is polished and consistent.

Instagram’s new label is therefore intended to provide a direct signal rather than requiring users to investigate an account themselves.

What the new policy means for Instagram users

For ordinary Instagram users, the change could make it easier to identify accounts built around completely artificial personalities.

For creators, the implications will depend on how Instagram detects AI-generated profiles and applies reach restrictions. Accounts that openly disclose their AI-generated nature can continue operating, while those that fail to disclose it could face reduced visibility.

The policy also establishes an important distinction between using AI as a creative tool and creating an AI identity.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into photography, video production, writing and social media management, such distinctions are likely to become more important.

Instagram moves towards greater AI transparency

Instagram’s decision reflects a broader challenge facing social media platforms: how to allow users to benefit from generative AI while preventing audiences from being misled.

The platform’s new AI-generated profile label does not eliminate AI-generated content from Instagram. Instead, it puts greater emphasis on transparency when an entire online identity is artificially created.

As AI-generated people become increasingly difficult to distinguish from real individuals, disclosure could become an important part of how social media platforms establish trust.

For now, Instagram’s approach gives AI-generated creators a route to remain on the platform while making their artificial identity clearer to users. At the same time, accounts that attempt to hide that identity could face reduced visibility in recommendations.
