New Delhi: OnePlus is preparing to launch its next flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 16, in China on October 12, with the company highlighting a large battery, a new Qualcomm flagship processor and gaming-focused hardware.
Ahead of the launch, OnePlus has confirmed several key details about the device, while other specifications remain based on leaks and reports. The smartphone is expected to focus heavily on performance and gaming, following the company’s strategy with the OnePlus 15.
The OnePlus 16 is also expected to bring significant upgrades to the camera system and battery capacity. However, its availability in India remains uncertain, with reports suggesting that OnePlus could instead introduce a OnePlus 16R in the country. The company has not officially confirmed the India launch plans.
OnePlus 16 launch date confirmed
The OnePlus 16 will make its debut in China on October 12, 2026.
The company has already started revealing specifications and features through teasers and announcements. OnePlus executives have confirmed the device’s battery capacity, while earlier announcements have detailed its chipset, gaming architecture and display capabilities.
A global launch has been reported for November, although OnePlus has not provided a confirmed international launch schedule in the India Today report.
The China launch will therefore be the first official availability of the new flagship.
9,000mAh battery confirmed
One of the biggest upgrades is the battery.
The OnePlus 16 will feature a 9,000mAh battery, according to OnePlus executive Li Jie Louise, who confirmed the capacity on Weibo.
This represents a substantial increase over the 7,300mAh battery used in the OnePlus 15. The larger cell could give the new phone greater endurance, particularly during gaming and other demanding workloads.
Earlier leaks have also suggested that the battery could support 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, although these charging specifications should be treated as reported information until OnePlus confirms them.
The large battery is expected to be one of the major selling points of the OnePlus 16, particularly for users who spend long periods gaming or consuming multimedia content.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 powers the phone
The OnePlus 16 will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest flagship processor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.
OnePlus has positioned the chipset as a major part of the phone’s performance and gaming capabilities. The processor is paired with the company’s new gaming-focused software and hardware architecture.
The chipset reportedly features a peak clock speed of up to 5.0GHz and is built on a 2nm process.
OnePlus has also developed a new gaming kernel and a three-chip esports system intended to improve gaming performance. The architecture uses dedicated processing for areas including display output, touch response and connectivity.
185Hz gaming support
The OnePlus 16 will feature a display capable of a 165Hz refresh rate during regular use, while supported games can reach up to 185Hz.
OnePlus has confirmed native 185fps support for games including Arena Breakout, Nizhan: Future, Naruto Mobile and Peace Elite.
The company says its new gaming architecture is designed to maintain high frame rates for longer periods. This is supported by the new gaming kernel and dedicated gaming chips.
The focus on high refresh rates and sustained performance suggests that gaming will remain one of the central features of the OnePlus flagship.
Triple-chip gaming architecture
OnePlus is also introducing a self-developed three-chip esports system with the OnePlus 16.
The architecture is designed to distribute gaming-related tasks across dedicated components handling display, touch response and connectivity.
The company has also introduced its new Fengchi Gaming Kernel, which is intended to help maintain high frame rates during extended gaming sessions.
OnePlus previously used gaming-focused hardware and software on the OnePlus 15, but the new system appears to place even greater emphasis on performance optimisation.
200MP camera expected
The OnePlus 16 is expected to receive a major camera upgrade.
OnePlus has confirmed a 200-megapixel primary camera and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera. Reports also point to an additional 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera.
The reported camera configuration is expected to include:
- 200MP primary camera
- 50MP ultra-wide camera
- 50MP periscope telephoto camera
- 50MP autofocus front camera
The telephoto camera is reportedly capable of 3x optical zoom and up to 6x lossless zoom.
The front camera is also expected to use a 50MP sensor with autofocus, although some of these specifications remain unconfirmed.
Reported 5.38 million AnTuTu score
The OnePlus 16 has reportedly appeared on the AnTuTu benchmarking platform.
A configuration with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage reportedly achieved more than 5.38 million points in AnTuTu.
The reported score indicates the performance potential of the Snapdragon-powered flagship, although benchmark results from pre-launch devices should not be treated as a direct measure of final retail performance.
The device is expected to be available in multiple memory and storage configurations, including 12GB and 16GB RAM options.
Display and design details
The OnePlus 16 is expected to feature a 6.78-inch display.
India Today’s current specifications listing indicates a resolution of 1,272 x 2,772 pixels, while reports have suggested a high-refresh-rate AMOLED panel. The phone is also expected to have slimmer bezels than its predecessor.
The smartphone will reportedly be available in three colour options: Tomorrow’s Starlight, Mars Masterpiece and Dark Forest.
The final design and colour names may vary slightly in English translations from Chinese.
Expected RAM and storage options
The OnePlus 16 is expected to offer several memory and storage combinations.
The reported configurations include:
- 12GB RAM + 256GB storage
- 12GB RAM + 512GB storage
- 16GB RAM + 512GB storage
- 16GB RAM + 1TB storage
India Today’s specifications page currently lists the device as a rumoured product and mentions Android 17 as its operating system.
The China model is expected to use ColorOS 17, according to the India Today report, rather than OxygenOS, which is used on OnePlus phones in international markets.
India launch remains uncertain
While the China launch date is confirmed, the situation in India is less clear.
Reports have suggested that OnePlus could skip the standard OnePlus 16 in India and instead launch the OnePlus 16R as its top-end offering in the country. This remains unconfirmed by OnePlus.
This would be a significant change because India has traditionally been one of OnePlus’ key markets.
For now, Indian consumers will have to wait for an official announcement before the company’s plans for the OnePlus 16 in the country become clear.
OnePlus 16 expected to target gaming enthusiasts
The OnePlus 16 is shaping up as a performance-focused flagship, with its 9,000mAh battery, Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 processor, high-refresh-rate display and dedicated gaming architecture forming the core of its hardware strategy.
The 200MP camera system and large storage options could also broaden its appeal beyond gaming.
However, several details, including the exact global launch plans, Indian availability, charging specifications and some camera features, remain subject to official confirmation.
For now, the October 12 China launch is the key confirmed milestone, after which OnePlus is expected to reveal additional details about pricing, availability and the complete specifications of its new flagship.
