OnePlus is reportedly preparing a significant camera-focused upgrade with its next flagship, the OnePlus 16, a move that could address user criticism surrounding the camera choices on the OnePlus 15.
Early leaks had suggested that OnePlus might continue with design and hardware decisions that divided opinion among fans. However, fresh information now indicates that the company is placing renewed emphasis on imaging performance.
200MP camera upgrade on the cards
According to noted tipster Digital Chat Station, posting on Weibo, the OnePlus 16 could feature a 200MP camera sensor. The report suggests that this high-resolution sensor may be used for both the main and telephoto cameras.
The leak adds that OnePlus could adopt the same camera hardware expected on the upcoming Oppo Find N6, continuing a pattern of shared components between the two brands. Previously, the OnePlus 15 and Oppo Find N5 used identical 50MP main and telephoto sensors.
The OnePlus 16 is expected to launch towards the end of 2026, with October being the most likely window.
Addressing OnePlus 15 criticism
One of the key complaints about the OnePlus 15 was its comparatively smaller camera sensors when measured against the OnePlus 13. While real-world image quality did not drop drastically, many loyal users felt the camera hardware represented a step backwards for a flagship device.
A move to a 200MP sensor could help restore confidence in OnePlus’s camera credentials, particularly if paired with improvements in sensor size and image processing.
Following industry trends
Industry trends suggest that ultra-high-resolution sensors are increasingly being used in telephoto or periscope lenses to enhance zoom performance rather than as primary shooters. Flagship models such as the Honor Magic8 Pro, Xiaomi 17 Ultra and Vivo X300 Pro have already adopted this strategy.
Experts caution, however, that megapixel count alone does not guarantee better photography. Larger sensors with fewer pixels often perform better in low light and dynamic range, making image processing and sensor quality just as important as resolution.
What lies ahead
If the rumours hold true, the OnePlus 16’s camera system could represent a meaningful course correction rather than a simple spec bump. More details are expected to emerge closer to launch, shedding light on whether OnePlus can translate big numbers on paper into real-world photographic gains.
