OpenAI has made a major structural change to further its mission of developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the benefit of humanity. CEO Sam Altman announced in an open letter that the company’s for-profit arm will transition into a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), replacing the previous capped-profit model with a traditional equity structure. The nonprofit parent, OpenAI Inc., will retain full control over the new for-profit entity.
This shift aligns OpenAI with peers like Anthropic and xAI, which also operate under similar models. The restructuring allows OpenAI to better meet the increasing global demand for AI tools, such as ChatGPT, which the company is currently unable to supply at scale. Altman emphasized the company’s desire to build an accessible and powerful AI platform that serves global needs.
The new PBC will focus on scaling up capabilities and ensuring that AI remains safe, widely available, and aligned with human needs. OpenAI Inc., as the nonprofit parent, will also establish a new commission to explore AI’s applications in sectors like healthcare, education, and public services, emphasizing societal impact.
Altman reaffirmed that OpenAI’s core goal is to create AGI that benefits all, positioning the company as a key player in global AI development while ensuring equitable deployment.
