After years of anticipation, Meta has finally introduced a standalone WhatsApp app for iPads — available globally via the Apple App Store starting Wednesday. This long-awaited version mirrors the functionality of its iPhone counterpart, delivering a seamless messaging and calling experience on a larger screen.

The iPad-specific app supports high-quality voice and video calls for up to 32 participants, screen sharing, and the ability to toggle between front and rear cameras. Previously, iPad users had to resort to using the browser-based WhatsApp Web, which lacked full access to device hardware features.

Users can now enjoy effortless syncing of messages, calls, and media across their iPhone, Mac, and iPad. All communications remain protected with end-to-end encryption, ensuring privacy and security.

As a native iPad app, it integrates smoothly with iPadOS features like Split View, Slide Over, and Stage Manager. This allows multitasking, such as chatting while browsing or planning a group trip while on a video call — capabilities that were difficult on smartphones due to limited screen space.

Moreover, the app works efficiently with Apple accessories like the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil, enhancing productivity and ease of use.

Though WhatsApp launched in 2009, and Meta acquired it in 2014, the iPad never got a dedicated app until now. Despite the iPad being a market leader in tablets, technical and policy hurdles had delayed the rollout.

With over 3 billion active users globally, and India leading with more than 535 million users, WhatsApp’s iPad debut marks a major milestone.
