Apple iPhone users can now set WhatsApp as their default messaging and calling app. This long-awaited update, initially expected for European Union users only, is now available worldwide with iOS version 25.8.74, released on March 27.

Previously, iPhone users could select default email and calling apps, but WhatsApp’s inclusion for both messaging and calls is new. Once updated, users can navigate to Settings > Apps > Default Apps to select WhatsApp for messages and calls instead of Apple’s Messages or Phone apps.

This change impacts how calls and texts are handled. When selecting a contact’s number, the default action will now route the call via WhatsApp instead of the Phone app. Similarly, messages will be sent over WhatsApp rather than iMessage. Siri will also prioritize WhatsApp for voice commands related to calls and texts.

Unlike standard cellular calls, WhatsApp exclusively relies on data, similar to FaceTime. This may be inconvenient in areas with weak Wi-Fi or mobile data, where traditional calls could perform better.

The update has sparked mixed reactions, especially among users cautious about relying entirely on a third-party app for communication. While WhatsApp dominates messaging in many countries, U.S. users may still prefer Apple’s built-in options.
