WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows users to send voice messages when a call goes unanswered, similar to the iPhone’s voicemail system. The update, currently available for iOS devices, adds a ‘Record voice message’ button directly on the call screen, eliminating the need to end a call, open the chat window, and manually send an audio note.
How the feature works
When a voice call is not answered, users can tap the option to record a short note, which is sent immediately along with the missed call notification. This enables recipients to understand the purpose of the call without waiting for a separate text message. Reports from WABetaInfo also suggest that WhatsApp plans to extend a similar feature for video calls, allowing users to send short video messages if a video call is unanswered.
The move aims to provide faster communication while reducing the steps involved in following up on missed calls. Currently, the feature is being rolled out gradually, and Android users have not yet received a confirmed release timeline.
Unified Calls hub redesign
The update coincides with WhatsApp’s reorganisation of its Calls tab. The platform has introduced a unified call hub that combines voice and video call tools in one interface. The hub features four key options:
- Call button: Initiate individual or group calls with up to 31 participants.
- Scheduling button: Plan calls for a later time.
- Keypad button: Dial numbers directly, even if they are not saved on the device.
- Favourites section: Pin frequently contacted numbers for quick access.
The redesign aims to streamline the way users manage and schedule calls, making the calling experience within WhatsApp more intuitive.
Broader digital safety context in India
In related news, the Government of India is preparing regulations requiring messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal to remain linked to an active SIM card on the user’s device. Officials say the move will enhance digital safety by closing gaps that cybercriminals exploit for large-scale fraud.
While telecom operators represented by the Cellular Operators Association of India have welcomed the measure, digital platforms under the Broadband India Forum have urged the government to review the rollout timeline, citing implementation challenges and potential user concerns.
WhatsApp users can expect the new features to appear gradually, with the company indicating that it will continue to refine its call and messaging tools for a better user experience.
