Tracked across 3 states, Bengaluru sex assault accused held in Kerala village
In a dramatic end to a multi-state manhunt, Bengaluru police have arrested a man accused of sexually harassing a woman, after pursuing him across three states and analysing over 700 CCTV recordings.
The case began when surveillance footage captured a disturbing scene in BTM Layout. A man was seen trailing two women down a narrow alley. Despite their attempts to avoid him, he suddenly assaulted one of them by groping her. The second woman tried to intervene, but the attacker quickly escaped.
Identified as 26-year-old Santosh, the accused was employed as a driver at a Jaguar showroom in Bengaluru. Once police began investigating, he fled to Hosur in Tamil Nadu, then moved through Salem before hiding out in a secluded village in Kerala. His capture came nearly a week after the incident, following relentless efforts by law enforcement.
Authorities filed charges under sections dealing with physical assault, harassment, and stalking. The two women involved were located, though they declined to participate further in the investigation, citing a desire for privacy.
Officers faced difficulty identifying the suspect due to poor video clarity. However, they pressed on and ultimately succeeded in tracking him.
Meanwhile, the incident sparked controversy after Karnataka’s Home Minister G Parameshwara made a contentious comment, suggesting such crimes are bound to happen in large cities. Opposition leaders criticised his remarks as insensitive and irresponsible.
Following backlash, Parameshwara clarified his intent and issued an apology if anyone was offended.
