On Monday, train services between several destinations in Southern and Central Tamil Nadu and Chennai were severely disrupted after Southern Railway suspended traffic between Vikravandi and Mundiyampakkam due to water overflowing on a bridge. The suspension of traffic on bridge no. 452 led to cancellations, diversions, and short terminations of multiple trains.

Around 50 trains were affected, including more than 15 services between Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Thanjavur, and Karaikudi. Notably, the Vande Bharat Express and other key services were cancelled. Several trains were either short terminated at Villupuram or Virudhachalam stations or diverted through Arakkonam to reach their final destinations at Chennai Egmore or Tambaram.

The issue arose early on Monday when the water level on the bridge rose above the danger mark, prompting Southern Railway to suspend traffic for safety reasons. This disruption caused significant delays in travel between Chennai and the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. Among the services cancelled were four Vande Bharat Express trains between Chennai-Tirunelveli and Chennai-Nagercoil, along with the Tejas Express between Chennai and Madurai.

This unprecedented situation left many commuters stranded, with railway officials working to restore services as quickly as possible. The impact of the flooding underscores the challenges posed by severe weather conditions in the region.
