In a shocking turn of events, a convicted felon, Deobra Redden, unleashed a violent assault on Judge Mary Kay Holthus in a Las Vegas courtroom as she was in the process of sentencing him to jail. The dramatic scuffle, captured on video, unfolded in the Clark County court, revealing the assailant’s sudden attack on the judge.

As the sentencing proceedings were underway, the 30-year-old Redden, facing charges related to domestic violence, abruptly lunged over the bench at Judge Holthus. The footage depicts the chaotic scene as court staff immediately sprang into action to protect the judge, pulling Redden away and attempting to subdue him.

The intensity of the scuffle resulted in injuries, with a court marshal and Judge Holthus both sustaining harm. The marshal, injured in the line of duty, was promptly taken to the hospital, while Judge Holthus, although injured, did not require hospitalization.

The altercation transpired after Redden’s attorney sought probation for the convict in light of the attempted battery with substantial bodily harm conviction. However, Judge Holthus, expressing a different stance, remarked, “I think it’s time he gets a taste of something else.” It was at this moment that Redden aggressively lunged at the judge, sparking the violent confrontation.

Redden, with a history of serving prison time for domestic battery, now faces additional charges of battery and battery on a protected person. Local news outlet 8 News Now reported that he has been summoned to appear in court on the new charges on Thursday.

Following the shocking incident, a spokesperson for Clark County Court revealed that a review of protocols was underway to assess the security measures in place. The spokesperson provided an update on the injuries sustained during the scuffle, stating, “Judge Holthus experienced some injuries, and her condition is being monitored. The marshal sustained injuries and has been transported to the hospital. Our understanding is that he is in stable condition. We commend the heroic acts of her staff, law enforcement, and all others who subdued the defendant.”

This alarming courtroom assault serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers faced by judicial officers in the execution of their duties. The incident raises questions about courtroom security protocols and the need for continuous evaluation to ensure the safety of judges, court staff, and all participants in the legal process. As the legal proceedings against Redden continue, the aftermath of this violent encounter will undoubtedly prompt a thorough examination of the measures in place to protect the sanctity of the courtroom.
