Instagrammer Calls Dal Fara ‘Desi Dumpling’ from Uttar Pradesh

Vanshika Agarwal, known as @tajholicfoodies on Instagram, is an Agra-based food blogger who recently shared a video of a popular Uttar Pradesh breakfast dish called dal fara. In her video, she talked about the dish and how it resembles momos, dubbing it ‘UP ke desi dumpling.’ She explained that dal fara is much healthier than momos, as it is made with whole wheat flour and a chana dal filling.

Unlike momos, which are made with all-purpose flour (maida), dal fara is made with whole wheat flour (atta). The filling is prepared with chana dal, chillies, coriander, and various desi spices, mixed to form a thick paste. The atta dough is rolled out to form a puri-like shape, filled with the chana dal paste, sealed like dumplings, and cooked in water. Finally, they are cut into smaller pieces, given a tadka with vegetables and spices, and enjoyed with chutney.

Netizens Share What They Call This Popular Dish in Their Region

While sharing the video, @tajholicfoodies asked what this dish is called in different parts of the country, and her comments section is filled with various answers. As it turns out, Dal Fara has different names even within different parts of Uttar Pradesh! Netizens shared these variations in the comments, showcasing the diverse culinary traditions.
