New Delhi: A video showing a heated altercation between two passengers on the Delhi Metro has gone viral, reigniting concerns over misbehaviour in one of India’s busiest public transport systems. The footage, widely circulated on social media platform X, caused “Delhi Metro” to trend on Saturday evening as viewers expressed their frustration over the recurring incidents of disorderly conduct on the metro.

In the video, two young men can be seen engaging in a physical and verbal confrontation, despite the relatively low crowd at the time. The incident unfolds with both individuals exchanging insults, focusing on derogatory remarks about each other’s appearance and social status. The term “chapri,” a colloquial insult, is repeatedly used as the two men grab each other’s collars and argue heatedly.

The confrontation escalates when one of the men, boasting about his choice of salon, mocks the other, claiming that people like him wouldn’t even be allowed near the place where he gets his haircut. The second man retaliates, downplaying the first man’s arrogance by asserting that not every expert is a salon expert. As tensions rise, a third passenger intervenes, forcibly removing the instigator from the metro.

This incident is the latest in a series of similar occurrences that have plagued the Delhi Metro, which serves over 6 million passengers daily. The high volume of commuters, particularly during peak hours, has contributed to an increase in altercations and disruptive behaviour, with many such incidents being recorded and shared on social media.

Efforts to Curb Misbehaviour

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has acknowledged the ongoing issue of passenger misconduct and has been working to curb such behaviour. The DMRC claims to impose fines on those who engage in unruly conduct, and metro police have been proactive in filing cases when necessary. Despite these measures, the persistence of such incidents suggests that more needs to be done to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers.

The DMRC has also been running awareness campaigns, urging passengers to maintain decorum and respect others while using the metro. However, the effectiveness of these campaigns is being called into question, as videos of similar incidents continue to emerge, reflecting the challenges in enforcing proper behaviour in such a densely populated public space.

Social Media Reaction

The video has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with many users expressing their dismay over the state of public conduct on the metro. Some have called for stricter enforcement of rules, while others have highlighted the need for more extensive public education on respectful behaviour in shared spaces.

This latest incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining civility in public transportation systems, where the daily lives of millions are intertwined. The DMRC’s ongoing efforts to address these issues will need to be robust and multifaceted to ensure that the Delhi Metro remains a safe and comfortable mode of transport for all.
