Union Minister of State for Railways, V. Somanna, has announced the launch of a new MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train service between Tumkur and Yeshavantpur, marking a significant improvement in regional connectivity. This decision comes as a response to longstanding demands from the local population for more reliable and frequent passenger train services.
Starting from Monday, the MEMU train service will operate six days a week, excluding Sundays. The first train will depart Tumkur at 8:55 a.m., reaching Yeshavantpur (Bangalore) at 10:25 a.m. For the return journey, the train will leave Yeshavantpur at 5:40 p.m. and arrive back in Tumkur at 7:05 p.m. This schedule aims to facilitate daily commutes for passengers travelling between the two cities.
In addition to the regular services, special MEMU trains will run on Mondays and Saturdays to further accommodate passenger needs. On Mondays, a train will leave Banasawadi at 6:15 a.m., arriving in Tumkur at 8:35 a.m. On Saturdays, a special service will depart Tumkur at 7:40 p.m., reaching Banasawadi at 10:05 p.m. The new MEMU service will make stops at 12 stations along the route, including Katsandra, Heerehalli, and Chikkabanavara, providing convenient access for passengers at various points.
The introduction of this MEMU train service is expected to be a major boost for the local community, which had been advocating for a reliable passenger train service connecting Tumkur with Bengaluru. The service promises to ease the daily commute for many, offering a more efficient alternative to road travel.
MLA G. B. Jyotiganesh expressed gratitude towards Minister V. Somanna for addressing the long-standing demand for this train service. The new MEMU train is anticipated to enhance convenience for commuters and support regional development.
In conjunction with the launch of the MEMU service, two significant infrastructure projects have been approved to further improve connectivity in the region. A pedestrian subway near Shettihalli gate has been sanctioned with a budget of ₹2.48 crore, aiming to enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians. Additionally, a railway underbridge for light vehicle traffic near Bhimasandra has been sanctioned for ₹1.87 crore, which is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and improve local transportation infrastructure.
These developments reflect ongoing efforts to enhance transportation infrastructure and meet the growing needs of the local population. The MEMU train service and the associated infrastructure projects underscore the commitment to improving regional connectivity and supporting community needs.
