Udupi Diocese Observes Maundy Thursday with Reverence and Reflection
Udupi: Christians across the Udupi Diocese solemnly marked Maundy Thursday, commemorating the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his disciples. The sacred observance took place at Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur, with a deeply moving Eucharistic celebration led by Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo.
He was joined by Msgr Ferdinand Gonsalves, cathedral rector and vicar general of the diocese, along with Fr Pradeep Cardoza (assistant parish priest), Fr Dr Jancil Alva (resident priest), Fr Stephen D’Souza (chancellor of the diocese), Fr Ronson D’Souza (rector, Holy Cross Home, Katapadi), and Fr Manoj Furtado (rector, Pilar Fathers, Kallianpur).
In his homily, Bishop Lobo reflected on the significance of Holy Thursday. “This day represents the Lord’s Supper, service, and love,” he said. Highlighting the symbolic act of Jesus washing the feet of His disciples, the Bishop urged the faithful to adopt a life of humility, compassion, and service. “Like Christ, let us be ready to serve others with love and kindness,” he added.
Following the homily, the Bishop performed the ritual washing of the feet of selected laypersons, a powerful reenactment of Jesus’ act of servanthood.
The celebration concluded with the reverent procession of the Holy Eucharist to the Altar of Repose, beautifully adorned with flowers. This marked the beginning of silent adoration, encouraging personal reflection and prayer.
Maundy Thursday sets the tone for Good Friday, a day when Christians around the world solemnly recall the Passion and Crucifixion of Jesus Christ, especially through the Way of the Cross, a central Good Friday devotion in Catholic tradition.
