Udupi Municipality Seizes 12 Tonnes of Banned Chinese Garlic in Market Raid
Udupi: On Monday, officials from the Udupi City Municipality conducted a raid at the APMC Market in Adi Udupi following complaints about the sale of banned Chinese garlic. The operation resulted in the seizure of 12 tonnes of garlic, with concerns raised about its quality.
The raid was led by Municipality Commissioner Rayappa, accompanied by APMC officers, who inspected the market for the presence of Chinese garlic. The Indian government has prohibited the sale of this garlic due to its high pesticide content. During the inspection, officers engaged with vendors and ultimately confiscated bags of garlic weighing approximately 12 tonnes, deeming their quality suspicious.
Commissioner Rayappa stated that the entire stock of garlic found at the APMC Market in Udupi has been confiscated and sent for laboratory testing in Mangaluru to determine if it is indeed Chinese garlic. Further actions will be based on the test results.
Rayappa also issued a stern warning to vendors, stating that the sale of any vegetables and fruits, including garlic, containing harmful chemicals is strictly prohibited within the municipality’s jurisdiction. To enforce this, the Municipality has appointed staff to monitor the supply and sale of such products, emphasizing that strict legal action will be taken against violators.
