Authorities in Udupi have cracked down on an unauthorized animal confinement facility in Saligrama, rescuing more than 200 animals kept in appalling conditions. The establishment, operating under the name ‘Animal Rescue Centre’ and run by Sudhindra Aithal, was found violating multiple animal welfare laws.
The large-scale rescue, executed in phases on January 7, January 11, and February 12, was spearheaded by PETA India in coordination with the Udupi SPCA, Animal Husbandry Department, Forest Department, Pattana Panchayat, and local police. The operation was initiated following directives from the Deputy Commissioner after an SPCA meeting.
Several protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, including cobras, black kites, civet cats, bonnet macaques, and Alexandrine parakeets, were among those rescued. Additionally, Persian cats, Indian dog breeds, Java sparrows, sugar gliders, and hedgehogs were also found in the facility. The Forest Department had earlier registered a case under sections 39 and 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act.
Officials described the conditions as deplorable, with animals suffering from malnutrition, dehydration, infections, and severe wounds. PETA India emphasized the need for strict enforcement of animal welfare laws and urged the dismantling of remaining cages.
Authorities have reminded that all pet shops and breeding centers must be registered as per the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals rules, with Karnataka’s 2020 directive mandating the closure of unregistered facilities.
