A total of 37 schools from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have been selected under the PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme, a Central Government initiative focused on upgrading government schools with enhanced infrastructure and educational standards. Across Karnataka, 665 schools have been chosen under the scheme.
Aligned with the National Education Policy, the scheme provides ₹10–15 lakh per school over the next five years to support developmental efforts. The selection process unfolded in six phases during the 2023–24 and 2024–25 academic years, through a rigorous evaluation of data uploaded by schools via the PM SHRI app.
Out of 230+ schools in Dakshina Kannada and 165 in Udupi that submitted their data, only 23 from DK and 14 from Udupi met the strict criteria, including scoring above 70 marks on parameters like infrastructure, student strength, and administration.
Selected schools will receive funding for teacher salaries (pre-primary and support staff), ₹500 per student annually for field trips, and eco-club activities (last year, ₹25,000 per school was allotted).
Notable selected schools from Udupi include: Shirur Government School (Byndoor), Kuvempu Model School (Thekkatte), and Hebri Model GHPS. From Dakshina Kannada, names include: Daddalkadu Government English Medium School (Bantwal), Mulki Model GHPS, and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (Mudipu).
These schools will now be developed into model institutions, supporting the vision of equitable, inclusive, and quality education through focused investment and national policy alignment.
