Udupi: A new Akka Cafe has been inaugurated within the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Udupi, offering visitors clean, tasty and budget-friendly food while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for women. The initiative has been jointly organised by the district administration and the zilla panchayat.
Women-led initiative
The café will be managed by members of the Brahmashree Sanjeevini Federation under Kallianpur gram panchayat, who bring prior experience in catering services. This women-led team will prepare and serve snacks and meals to staff and visitors at affordable prices, ensuring a homely dining experience.
The project is part of the Akka Cafe scheme, launched by the Karnataka Department of Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, and Livelihood. The scheme aims to provide employment for working women while promoting hygienic, nutritious and low-cost food options in public offices.
Community support and training
According to officials, the Sanjeevini Women’s Group has undergone extensive training in food safety, preparation techniques, and service management. District officials expressed confidence that the café would serve as a model for similar projects across Karnataka.
Speaking at the launch, an official from the district administration said, “This initiative not only provides employment but also showcases the culinary skills of local women. It is a step toward self-reliance and community-driven development.”
Promoting local entrepreneurship
The cafe’s operation entirely by women entrepreneurs highlights the growing focus on inclusive development. The menu will feature regional snacks and light meals, catering to both government employees and visitors to the DC office.
Future plans include the possibility of expanding the initiative to other public institutions in Udupi district, creating more income-generating opportunities for women’s self-help groups.
Boost to skill development programmes
Officials from the Skill Development Department stated that the Akka Cafe initiative ties into broader state government programmes aimed at empowering women economically through skill training and entrepreneurship support.
With growing appreciation for healthy and home-style food, the Udupi Akka Cafe is expected to see significant patronage, further motivating similar ventures in neighbouring districts.
