Udupi: The CSI Lombard Memorial Hospital (Mission Hospital) inaugurated its Breast Cancer Testing Unit (Mammography Unit) on Saturday, marking a major step in improving women’s healthcare in the region. The facility was officially opened by Udupi District Magistrate Swaroopa TK, who praised the hospital for its long-standing commitment to public service.
Hospital’s legacy of service
Speaking at the event, the DC said, “It is a matter of pride that Mission Hospital has been providing excellent service to the people of this area continuously for the past 103 years. The vision of the hospital’s founder is still being upheld with the same dedication and loyalty. I hope this hospital continues to grow and serve the community for another 100 years.”
Importance of early detection
Dr. Sushil Jattana, Director of CSI Lombard Memorial Hospital, emphasised the importance of early screening. “We have not started this centre to make any profit. Our primary aim is to serve people. Breast cancer is now the most common form of cancer among women. Hence, regular check-ups once or twice a year are crucial for early detection and treatment,” he said.
Event highlights
The event, held at the hospital chapel, featured blessings from CSI KSD Treasurer Rev. Ivan DeSons. Other speakers included CSI KSD Women’s Fellowship President Bharathi Hemachandra, Deputy Director Dr. Deepa Rao, and Mind Trainer and Counsellor Tanuja Maben.
Prayers were led by CSI KSD Udupi Area Chairman Rev. Kishore Kumar and LMH Chaplain Rev. Rachel D’Silva. Nursing College Principal Dr. Suja Karkada delivered the welcome address, Nursing Superintendent Shaivalya Devadiga proposed the vote of thanks, and HR Manager Leona Strelita compered the event.
Boost to cancer awareness
The hospital hopes the new mammography unit will encourage more women to undergo preventive screenings and promote greater awareness about breast cancer risks and treatment.
