Udupi: The timely intervention of a private bus driver helped save the life of a passenger who suffered a sudden medical emergency while travelling from Shivamogga to Udupi.

The incident occurred near Parkala when a passenger on the private bus reportedly developed serious health complications during the journey. Realising the gravity of the situation, driver Manjunath acted swiftly and diverted the bus directly to the emergency department of a private hospital in Manipal, ensuring the passenger received immediate medical attention.

Doctors later confirmed that the passenger’s condition had stabilised and that he was recovering well following treatment.

Passenger falls ill during journey

According to driver Manjunath, the incident took place while the bus was travelling from Shivamogga to Udupi on Tuesday.

He said the conductor alerted him that one of the passengers appeared to be unwell. Acting on the information, Manjunath stopped the bus near the MIT area and checked on the passenger.

Upon examining him, the driver realised that the man was showing symptoms of a possible cardiac arrest.

“He was cold and drenched in sweat. I immediately sensed that the situation was serious and required urgent medical attention,” Manjunath said.

Recognising that every minute was crucial, he decided not to wait for an ambulance or ask the passengers to alight from the bus. Instead, he drove the vehicle straight to the emergency department of a private hospital in Manipal.

Prompt action helps save life

The passenger was immediately admitted to the hospital upon arrival and received the necessary treatment from doctors.

Medical staff reportedly attended to him without delay, and his condition has since improved. Doctors have stated that the passenger is stable and recovering well.

The driver’s prompt response is being credited with ensuring the passenger received treatment in time, which may have prevented a potentially tragic outcome.

Driver says he only did his duty

Speaking about the incident, Manjunath said he simply acted on humanitarian grounds.

“I did what any human being should do. Since I also drive an ambulance, I could understand the seriousness of the situation. I believe any responsible driver would have acted in the same way,” he said.

His experience as an ambulance driver enabled him to recognise the symptoms quickly and appreciate the urgency of the situation.

Passengers aboard the bus and members of the public have praised Manjunath’s presence of mind and sense of responsibility.
