Udupi district has seen 11 cholera cases in just one week, prompting officials to issue a call for enhanced hygiene and caution to prevent further outbreaks. Udupi Deputy Commissioner Vidya Kumari K stated that five cases were identified at the Idu Primary Health Center in Karkala. Additional cases of vomiting and diarrhea in Malpe, Shirva, Kaup, and Kemmannu were also confirmed as cholera.
The affected individuals include two women, a child, five bar-goers, and two fishermen. All are currently recovering well, according to officials. In a district meeting, the DC emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness to stop the disease from spreading.
Citizens are advised to thoroughly wash seafood, fruits, and vegetables before eating and practice proper hand hygiene after handling food or using the toilet. Restaurants and food vendors should use hot water for cleaning and serving, and people are urged to avoid street food, which may be contaminated.
The DC also asked schools, colleges, and anganwadis to teach children the importance of regular handwashing before meals. Cholera, caused by Vibrio cholerae, is typically transmitted through contaminated food or water and can lead to severe dehydration.
The district is also fighting mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue and chikungunya. A cleanliness drive will run from September 14 to October 2 to clean public areas and test drinking water.
