Karkala – Christ King Pre-University College, Karkala, commemorated Press Day with a reflective and inspiring programme celebrating the essential role of journalism in upholding democracy. The event was inaugurated by retired journalist Bipinchandra Pal from Nakre, who lit the ceremonial lamp.
In his address, Pal emphasized the indispensable contribution of the press in maintaining a democratic society. “Ethics must guide journalism. In this evolving media environment, journalists must remain bold, impartial, and truthful,” he said. “A journalist must serve the people—not any person or power.”
Dr Peter Fernandes, representing the Christ King Education Trust, presided over the ceremony. He remarked, “Despite the dominance of digital media, newspapers still hold public trust. Journalists give a voice to the voiceless, and their service to society reflects true patriotism.”
Mohammed Sharif, president of the Karkala Working Journalists Association, echoed this sentiment, urging journalists to adhere to accuracy, neutrality, and integrity in their reporting.
A highlight of the event was the felicitation of senior journalist Satish H Shetty from Madhyamabimba newspaper, who was honoured by the Education Trust for his impactful contributions to the field. Shetty shared valuable lessons from his long career in media.
Journalists, photographers, and media representatives from various organizations were also recognized for their dedication.
Present were faculty heads, media professionals, and retired journalists. The event was anchored by Umesh Bellippady, with the welcome by Deepak and the vote of thanks by Meghashree.
