Udupi: A district-level special training programme for the presidents, board members, and chief executives of women’s multi-purpose cooperative societies in Udupi was held on Tuesday at the Diamond Jubilee Hall of Udupi Lico Bank. The event was jointly organized by the Karnataka State Cooperative Federation, the Udupi District Cooperative Union, and the District Cooperative Department.

Presiding over the session, B. Jayakar Shetty Indrali, President of the Udupi District Cooperative Union, stressed that the cooperative sector will be the driving force of India’s future economic development. He pointed out that out of 750 cooperative societies in Udupi district, only 21 are led by women, and highlighted the rule that each society must include at least two women directors.

“Cooperatives are not private bodies; they function as government-owned institutions. Nearly 40% of the country’s population is engaged with cooperatives, and people have immense trust in them. It is the duty of every cooperative to uphold and strengthen this trust,” Shetty said.

The programme was inaugurated by Udupi Municipal Council Vice President Rajani Hebbar. Lions District Governor Sapna Suresh, Cooperative Union Director Y. Sudhir Kumar, and Assistant Professor of Sridhavala College, Moodbidri were present as chief guests.

Anusha Kotian, Chief Executive Officer of the Union, compered the event, which aimed at equipping women leaders with administrative and managerial skills to ensure more effective governance of cooperative societies.
