Udupi: Prominent social activist and Dalit leader Umanath succumbed to injuries on August 23, over ten days after a scooter accident triggered by a stray dog on NH-66 near Theme Palace Hall, Hejamadi village.
Accident and Medical Battle
The incident occurred on the night of August 12, when a dog reportedly dashed across the road, causing Umanath’s scooter to overturn. He sustained severe injuries and was admitted to Wenlock Hospital, Mangaluru, where he fought for his life for more than ten days before passing away.
Community Mourns Loss
A resident of Sujnan Colony, Umanath was widely respected for his tireless work in Dalit rights activism and his involvement with the Congress party and various social organisations.
“He was a fearless voice for the marginalised. His loss is not just to the family, but to the entire community,” said a local activist.
Police Action
The Padubidri police station has registered the incident and investigations are underway to assess road safety issues in the area.
Family and Legacy
Umanath is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. His sudden demise has left a significant void in local activism and social welfare initiatives.
