Dr. Satish Nayak Alambi, a professor at Melaka Manipal Medical College, alongside his family, has set a remarkable example of community involvement and environmental responsibility in their village, 80th Badagubettu, Udupi. Every Sunday and on holidays, Dr. Nayak, his wife Sowmya K V, an assistant professor at MIT, their daughter Samiksha, and nephews Ankit and Amit dedicate their time to cleaning roadsides and managing waste. Their initiative began when they observed the troubling practice of waste being dumped into the river near Alambi Bridge, prompting them to take action.

Their efforts have made a significant impact, leading to a notable reduction in waste dumping in the area. In recognition of their work, the local administration introduced a monthly waste collection fee of Rs 50 and a Rs 1,000 fine for littering. Moreover, individuals who report violations with photographic or video evidence are rewarded with Rs 500.

Dr. Nayak, renowned for his academic excellence, has earned several prestigious accolades, including the Merit Award from Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE). He has also contributed to major environmental causes, such as clean water initiatives, for which he won the Water Heroes of India competition. Beyond his academic and social service contributions, Dr. Nayak has a deep passion for Yakshagana, a traditional performing art, and has performed significant roles, including Vrishasena, Rama, Arjuna, and Kamsa.

A passionate advocate for cleanliness, Dr. Nayak’s commitment to Swachh Bharat began in his childhood. He has been instrumental in organizing awareness campaigns during national festivals and has contributed to various cleanliness drives. He urges everyone to separate their waste and ensure its proper disposal by the panchayat.
