Udupi: A 22-year-old man accused of repeated involvement in drug trafficking has been detained under the PIT NDPS Act, in a move aimed at curbing narcotics-related activities in the district.

The accused, Faizal from Banglegudde under the Karkala Town police limits, was taken into custody after authorities found his continued involvement in illegal drug trade posed a serious threat to public health and safety.

Detention order issued after review of cases

The action followed a detailed report submitted by the Karkala Town police inspector. Based on this, the Udupi Superintendent of Police forwarded a proposal to the Inspector General of Police, Western Range, Mangaluru, recommending preventive detention.

After examining the criminal background and the nature of offences registered against the accused, the detention order was formally issued on April 7.

Officials stated that such preventive measures are invoked in cases where habitual offenders continue illegal activities despite legal action, making it necessary to detain them to prevent further offences.

Accused taken into custody and lodged in prison

Following the issuance of the detention order, the Karkala Town police inspector executed the directive on the same day. The accused was taken into custody and subsequently lodged in the central prison in Dharwad.

Authorities confirmed that all legal procedures were followed during the detention process.

Multiple cases registered, including convictions

Police sources revealed that a total of five cases related to drug trafficking and sale have been registered against the accused. Among these, two cases have already resulted in conviction, indicating a proven pattern of criminal activity.

Two other cases are currently under trial in court, while one case remains under investigation. Officials noted that the repeated involvement in narcotics offences and the ongoing cases contributed significantly to the decision to invoke the PIT NDPS Act.

Crackdown on drug-related offences continues

The detention highlights ongoing efforts by district police to clamp down on drug trafficking networks and habitual offenders. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining public safety and preventing the spread of narcotics, particularly among youth.

Police officials have also urged the public to cooperate by sharing information related to drug activities, assuring strict action against those involved in illegal trade.

Conclusion

The preventive detention of the accused under the PIT NDPS Act marks a strong step by law enforcement agencies in Udupi to address recurring drug-related offences. With multiple cases already registered and some resulting in conviction, the action underscores the administration’s intent to curb the menace of narcotics and protect public health in the region.
