Udupi: A 52-year-old man died by suicide after jumping into a well at Kakkunje in Ambagilu ward of the city late on Friday night. The deceased has been identified as Purushottam Nayak. The incident shocked local residents and triggered scenes of grief among family members and neighbours who gathered near the spot after the incident came to light.

According to initial information from local sources, Nayak allegedly tied a nylon rope at his residence before jumping into the well. Due to the nature of the fall and entanglement, the injuries were severe and fatal. Emergency responders and police later retrieved the body from the well in the presence of officials and witnesses.

Police said a case has been registered and an inquest and further investigation are in progress to establish the exact sequence of events and contributing factors.

Incident occurred late at night

The incident is reported to have taken place late at night when family members and nearby residents were indoors. It came to notice after relatives found signs indicating that he had gone toward the well and alerted others. Local residents gathered as the situation unfolded, and authorities were informed.

Police and rescue personnel reached the location and carried out recovery operations. Standard legal formalities, including spot inspection and documentation, were completed before shifting the body for post-mortem examination.

Officials said statements from family members and neighbours are being recorded as part of the inquiry.

Employed in hotel electrical maintenance

Nayak was working as an electrician attached to a hotel establishment in Manipal in an assistant supervision role. Sources said he was nearing the final phase of his service career. He was known among colleagues as a technically skilled worker with long years of service experience.

He was residing with his elder son, Guru, at their house in the locality. Family members are said to be deeply distressed by the sudden loss.

Police said they are also reviewing his recent personal and financial circumstances as part of routine investigation procedure in unnatural death cases.

Active in social and temple activities

Residents described Nayak as a well-known figure in local social and religious circles. He was actively associated with community activities and was serving as secretary of the administrative committee of Katte Mahadevi Temple at Kakkunje.

Community members said he was regularly involved in temple-related events and volunteer efforts. His death has drawn condolences from local organisations and devotees connected with the temple.

Several residents visited the family to offer support after news of the incident spread.

Financial stress suspected, no official confirmation yet

Some local residents indicated that financial difficulties may have caused stress and emotional strain. However, police officials said no conclusion has been reached yet regarding motive, and all angles are being examined.

Authorities emphasised that the investigation is ongoing and that only verified findings will be placed on record after completion of inquiry procedures.

If confirmed, this would add to concerns around mental health stress linked to financial and personal pressures among working-age individuals.

Police appeal for mental health awareness

Police and community leaders informally reiterated the importance of mental health awareness and timely support for individuals facing distress. They encouraged families and friends to seek counselling and professional help when signs of depression or emotional crisis are noticed.

Support services and helplines are available for those experiencing suicidal thoughts or severe emotional distress, officials noted.

Conclusion

The death of Purushottam Nayak has left the local community in shock, especially given his active public and religious involvement. Police investigation is continuing to determine the full circumstances behind the tragedy, while residents mourn the loss of a familiar and respected figure.
