Udupi: A veteran fisherman lost his life when his boat capsized in rough seas near the Malpe lighthouse on Wednesday, September 10.

Incident details

The deceased has been identified as Rama Kharvi, a resident of Sastana Koditale. Kharvi, who had been fishing alone from Malpe harbour for nearly three decades, set out as usual on Wednesday morning but did not return home by the afternoon.

Concerned family members, including his son, attempted to contact him, but received no response. This prompted relatives and friends to begin a search that continued late into the night, unfortunately without success.

Recovery and suspected cause

On Thursday, September 11, Kharvi’s body was recovered near the Malpe lighthouse. Initial reports suggest that his boat capsized due to strong sea currents, leaving him unable to swim to safety.

The mishap resulted in the complete destruction of the boat, along with its engine, nets, and other fishing equipment, causing significant financial loss to the family.

Conclusion

The incident underscores the dangers faced by fishermen in rough sea conditions and highlights the need for safety measures and timely communication during fishing operations. Local authorities have urged caution among the fishing community during adverse weather and strong currents.
