On the night of April 29, a new wave of fear swept through Koltige village after an elephant was spotted near Perlampady, just a day after a woman was tragically killed by a wild elephant in a rubber plantation at Artyadka. Locals reported disturbing noises of trees being damaged , sparking panic in the densely populated area.
There are suspicions that the elephant seen near Perlampady could be the same one responsible for the fatal incident at Artyadka on April 28. Forest officials have confirmed that a group of four to five elephants has been roaming the Kaniyaru forest area, occasionally straying into surrounding farmlands.
In response to the sightings, forest department personnel have been using firecrackers and noise to try and drive the elephants away. Despite these efforts, the elephant responsible for the woman’s death has not been located as of the evening of April 29, and the search operations continue without success.
Rubber tappers had previously called for action to address the threat posed by the elephant, but no resolution has been reached yet.
