Udupi: Heavy rain accompanied by thunder, lightning and strong winds over the last few days caused widespread damage across the district, affecting houses, roads, electricity infrastructure and communication services. Authorities also reported temporary disruption of traffic after a section of road at Goliholo on the Byndoor-Kollur National Highway was washed away due to the intense rainfall.
The severe weather conditions affected several parts of the district, with strong winds uprooting trees and damaging electric poles in multiple areas. Residents in some regions experienced prolonged power outages, while damage to houses and public infrastructure was reported from different taluks.
Officials said immediate steps were taken to restore normalcy and minimise inconvenience to the public.
District records significant rainfall
The district received an average rainfall of 35.5 mm during the period, with different taluks recording varying levels of precipitation.
Among the taluks, Byndoor recorded the highest rainfall at 74.8 mm, followed by Udupi with 62 mm and Kundapur with 53.8 mm. Other rainfall figures included Brahmavar at 25 mm, Hebri at 21.2 mm, Kaup at 9.6 mm and Karkala at 2.2 mm.
The continuous rainfall, coupled with gusty winds and thunderstorms, led to waterlogging and weather-related damage in several locations.
Officials said changing weather patterns during the monsoon period continue to require close monitoring and preparedness measures.
Road washout briefly disrupts connectivity
One of the major incidents reported during the spell of heavy rain was the washing away of a section of road at Goliholo on the Byndoor-Kollur National Highway.
The incident temporarily disrupted vehicular movement and raised concern among commuters and local residents. However, authorities undertook immediate repair and restoration work to reopen the route.
Swift intervention by highway authorities and local administration helped restore traffic movement within a short period.
B Y Raghavendra reportedly remained in regular contact with local representatives, highway engineers and district authorities after receiving information regarding the seriousness of the situation.
Officials said continuous coordination between various departments enabled rapid execution of repair works.
Strong winds damage power infrastructure
Heavy winds during the early morning hours in Kundapur and neighbouring taluks uprooted several trees and caused damage to electricity poles.
As a result, many villages witnessed extended power disruptions which reportedly continued until Sunday evening in certain areas. Damage to mobile communication towers was also reported from some locations.
Authorities initiated restoration work to repair damaged electric infrastructure and restore communication services in affected regions.
Residents in some areas faced inconvenience due to interruptions in electricity supply and network connectivity.
Houses damaged in several villages
Heavy rain, strong winds and lightning also caused damage to houses in different villages across the district.
In Kotathattu village of Brahmavar taluk, a house belonging to Ratna suffered damage to its cement and tiled roof, resulting in an estimated loss of Rs 30,000.
In Halanadu village of Kundapur taluk, a tree reportedly fell onto the house of Jalaja Kulalti and caused damage estimated at Rs 10,000.
Another incident was reported from Shivalli village in Udupi taluk, where a tree collapsed onto Meenakshi’s house, leading to losses estimated at Rs 25,000.
A lightning strike damaged the roof and walls of Girija Kulalti’s residence in Kavradi village of Kundapur taluk, causing losses estimated at Rs 10,000.
In Alevoor village, a mudslide partially damaged the house of Chennamma, resulting in an estimated loss of Rs 20,000. In Jadkal village of Byndoor taluk, an arecanut tree fell on Sadashiva Shetty’s cowshed, causing damage estimated at Rs 10,000.
Within Udupi city limits, a tree collapsed onto a house near Ramachandra Lane in Kinnimulki and also damaged an electric pole nearby. Another similar incident involving a tree falling on a house was reported from Hoode in Tonse village.
Authorities continue to assess damages while restoration work and precautionary measures are being undertaken in vulnerable areas.
