Udupi: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed several parts of Udupi district from Friday night, damaging at least 15 houses across multiple taluks and causing property losses worth several lakh rupees. District authorities are continuing damage assessment as field inspections progress in the affected areas.

Heavy rainfall recorded across the district

According to official data, Udupi district recorded an average rainfall of 42.4 mm during the last 24 hours.

Among the taluks, Hebri received the highest rainfall at 71.7 mm, followed by Kundapur (56.5 mm), Byndoor (51.5 mm), Brahmavar (44.8 mm), Udupi (31.0 mm), Karkala (14.6 mm) and Kapu (4.7 mm).

The heavy rainfall, coupled with strong winds, uprooted trees and damaged houses in several villages.

Houses damaged in Byndoor taluk

In Byndoor taluk, strong winds partially damaged the cement-sheet roof of the house belonging to Thimmappa Lingayya at Kirimanjeshwara village, causing an estimated loss of Rs 20,000.

At Alivekodi in Paduvari village, the tiled roof of Seetha Kharvi’s house was blown away by strong winds, resulting in damage estimated at Rs 10,000.

Damage reported in Kapu taluk

In Kapu taluk, heavy rain and gusty winds caused partial damage to two houses.

The house of Madhava Poojary at Pangala suffered damage estimated at Rs 10,000, while the house of Vishnumurthy at Innanje sustained losses estimated at Rs 30,000.

Kundapur reports multiple incidents

Kundapur taluk reported the highest number of damage incidents during the spell of severe weather.

At Kodi village, a coconut tree fell onto the house of Ibrahim, causing partial damage estimated at Rs 20,000.

In Hemmadi village, a large banyan tree branch crashed onto the house of Chikku, resulting in damage estimated at around Rs 80,000.

Another incident occurred at Mavinakatte in Karkunje village, where a tree fell on the house of Hajira, causing losses estimated at Rs 50,000.

At Kuntaneralu, a tree toppled onto the house of Muthu, damaging the property and causing an estimated loss of Rs 20,000.

Brahmavar also affected

In Brahmavar taluk, a tree fell on the house of Aita Poojary at Waramballi village, resulting in damage estimated at Rs 50,000, according to official sources.

Damage assessment continues

District authorities stated that the latest reports indicate 15 houses were damaged due to the overnight rain and strong winds.

However, detailed information released so far accounts for damage to eight houses, suggesting that assessment of the remaining incidents is still underway.

Earlier official estimates had placed the total loss at approximately Rs 2.20 lakh after damage to seven houses was recorded. The number of affected houses and the estimated losses increased as additional reports were received from different parts of the district.

Officials are continuing field inspections to assess the full extent of the damage and prepare updated reports for further relief and assistance.
