Udupi: In a move aimed at promoting economic activity and ensuring greater convenience for the public, the Udupi Municipal Council has resolved to allow hotels and shops in Udupi and Manipal to remain open until 11 pm. The decision was taken during the general council meeting presided over by Municipal Council President Prabhakar Poojary.
MLA Yashpal Suvarna raised the issue, pointing out that the current restriction requiring establishments to shut by 10 pm was proving inconvenient to residents, students, tourists, and relatives of patients visiting hospitals in the city. He emphasised that extending operating hours by one hour would not only benefit the public but also contribute to the district’s economy.
Concerns about economic impact and public convenience
The MLA argued that citing law and order as a reason for early closure was hurting business growth and limiting hospitality services in an area with significant tourism and educational presence. “In the economic interest of the district and for the convenience of the common people, the closing time for shops and hotels must be extended to 11 pm,” Suvarna urged, receiving unanimous support from council members.
Auction of municipal shops discussed
During the meeting, council member B. G. Hegde criticised officials for delays in auctioning municipal shop rooms, alleging negligence that had impacted revenue generation for the past nine months.
Municipal officials responded that about 15 shop rooms located in Udupi city, Malpe Santekate, and Gopalpur had already been auctioned with approval from the District Collector. However, finalisation of rental agreements and clearance of the DCE account had been delayed due to administrative transfers. Officials assured that the process would be completed within a week.
Economic boost expected
The extended hours are expected to benefit local businesses, eateries, and retail outlets, while improving facilities for the growing number of students, professionals, and visitors in Udupi and Manipal. Stakeholders believe this move could pave the way for future initiatives to develop Udupi as a vibrant late-evening economy hub.
